SC State Drops Howard 73-59 Move Into Second Place

ORANGEBURG, SC—Senior center Josh Jackson poured in 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Jason Flagler chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds as South Carolina State cruised to a 73-59 victory over Howard Monday in Orangeburg.

Freshman guard Jimmy Williams tossed in 12 points in the victory.

 

Howard was led by senior forward Eugene Myatt with 15 points, Randy Hampton and Paul Kirkpatrick each added 12 and Curtis White finished with 10 in the loss.

 

The Bison jumped out to an eight point lead, 16-24 on a 3-pointer by Randy Hampton at the 8:42 mark in the first-half.  The Bulldogs sparked a 7-2 run off a lay up by Josh Jackson to pull within one, 25-26 with 3:42 left in the half.

 

A Jimmy Williams dunk with 1:06 left put SC State ahead 31-29. The Bison rallied back on a 3-pointer by Curtis White to end the half with a 33-31 lead.

 

Eugene Myatt nailed a jumper at the 15:50 mark to give the Bison a 10 point lead, 33-43. SC State went on a 12-3 run off a lay up by Kenshay Johnson to pull within one, 45-46 with 11:37 left in the game.

 

The Bulldogs took control of the game going ahead eight, 57-49 on a dunk by Jason Johnson with 5:54 left. A Josh Jackson lay up sealed the deal and gave SC State a 10 point advantage, 65-55 with 2:01 left in the game.

 

SC State improved to 12-12 overall, 7-5 in the MEAC and move into second place behind leader Morgan State.  Howard drops 7-18, 5-6 in the league.

 

South Carolina will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Norfolk, Va to face the Spartans of Norfolk State University in a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.

ORANGEBURG, SC – Funeral services for former South Carolina State basketball standout Ernest “Sonny” Jackson will be held Friday (Mar. 26) at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Moriah Pentecostal Church, 7909 Stenton Ave., Philadelphia. Pa.  Jackson, a 1964 SC State alumnus, died Mar. 21 after an extended illness.
