VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – South Carolina State center Jason Johnson has been named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in as many weeks.
The 6-7, 220 Bronx native, averaged nine rebounds, four blocks and two steals in two games last week for the Bulldogs (11-12, 6-5 MEAC), who are in a five-way tie for second place in the league standings following a 74-71 overtime victory over Hampton Saturday. He grabbed a game-high 13 boards with six blocked shots and three steals in a 66-56 loss to Morgan State.
This is third overall weekly honor for Johnson, the MEAC rebounding (8.5 rpg) and field goal percentage (.642) leader, as he was named MEAC Player of the Week earlier in the campaign.
Also recognized were Coppin State’s Tywain McKee, as MEAC Player of the Week, and Kevin Thompson of Morgan State, selected as the Rookie of the Week.
The Bulldogs’ Jessie Burton and Jimmy Williams received honorable mention as MEAC player and rookie of the week, respectively.
