ORANGEBURG, SC-The South Carolina State men's and women's teams will host Hampton University in a pivotal MEAC doubleheader Saturday at Smith-Hammond-Middleton. The women's contest begins at 2 p.m., with the men following in a 4 p.m. tip-off.
For the second straight season, the SC State women's basketball team will wear pink uniforms in support of the WBCA Pink Zone (formerly “Think Pink”).
Second-year head coach Tim Carter and the Bulldogs suffered a heartbreaking 66-56 loss to top-ranked Morgan State on Monday, while Hampton University posted a 68-62 victory over UMES.
The Bulldogs are led by senior center Jason Johnson, the team's top scorer (14.8 ppg) and rebounder (8.7). Junior forward Jason Flagler is second in both categories with 12.7 points and 6.0 rebounds, respectively.
The SC State women(5-16, 2-8 MEAC), will try to get back on the winning track after dropping a tough 62-59 decision to the Lady Bears of Morgan State. The Lady Bulldogs are led by senior Marie Reid with 15.3 ppg and 5.9 rpg. Junior Sophilia Hipps is second in scoring with 15.0 ppg, while grabbing 4.2 rebounds per contest.
Breast cancer survivors will be honored at half-time of the women's game. Bulldogs fans are asked that all fans wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Week.
South Carolina State will return to action on Monday in a MEAC doubleheader against Howard University in a 5:30 p.m. tip-off for the women, with the men following in a 7:30 p.m. start.
