SC State Rout Voorhees 109-63 In Exhibition Play

ORANGEBURG, SC—Junior transfer guard Darnell Porter poured in 23 points, while Carrio Bennett tossed in 19 and grabbed in six rebounds as South Carolina State cruised to a 109-63 victory over Voorhees College Monday.

South Carolina State jumped out the gate quick 28-14 on a layup by Tyvon Williams at the 8:52 mark in the first half. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 20, 42-22 on a pair of free-throws by Porter with 3:49 left in the half.

A three-pointer by freshman guard Khalif Toombs gave the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the half 23, 47-24 with 2:00 minutes left. A tip-in by Brandon Smalls gave SC State a 51-29 lead to closed out the first-half.

The second-half was no different with SC State taking full control jumping out  to a 36 point lead, 70-34 off a three-pointer by Carrio Bennett at the 13:10 mark. Another three-pointer by Bennett with 3:17 left in the game open up a 39 point lead, 98-59.

SC State would build as much as a 50 point advantage with 1:19 left on a pair of free-throws by Brandon Smalls. The Bulldogs closed out their first exhibition play with a 109-63 win over Voorhees College.

Also, leading the way for the Bulldogs was Brandon Smalls wit h17 points, Westley Telfare with 15, and senior captain Jason Flagler finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

SC State finished with a game-high 43 rebounds and 19 steals and shot 61.5% from behind the three-point line connecting 16-30 from behind the arch. The Bulldogs also shot 19-26 from the free-throw line.

South Carolina State will return to action on Friday when they host Erskine College in exhibition play. Tip-off time is 7:30 p.m.
