SC State Basketball Teams Travel to B-Cookman

Basketball Update

ORANGEBURG, SC – The South Carolina State basketball teams travel to Daytona Beach Saturday for a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bethune-Cookman which gets underway at 2 p.m. with the women's contest. The men's matchup will follow at approximately 4 p.m. Both games will be carried by SC State campus radio station WSSB (90.3 FM), courtesy of a feed by the Wildcat Radio Network.

The SC State men (7-11, 2-4 MEAC) will be trying to put back-to-back wins together for the first time since starting the 2008-09 campaign 3-0. Coach Tim Carter's team snapped a five-game losing streak Monday with a 71-53 victory over league foe, North Carolina A&T, during an ESPNU live telecast from Orangeburg.

Senior center Jason Johnson, who is having a solid season, spearheads the Bulldog attack and leads the team in both scoring (15.6 ppg) and rebounding (7.9 rpg). He is supported by junior Jason Flagler (13.1 ppg, 5.6 rpg).

The Wildcats (11-9, 5-2 MEAC) are off to one of their best starts under former B-CC standout Clifford Reed. B-CC has won two in a row and four of its last five in moving into contention for a strong finish in the league. Reed's team is coming off a 58-55 road victory against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Monday.
The SC State women (4-13, 1-5 MEAC) will be looking to establish some continuity against league foes. First-year head coach Doug Robertson's team is coming off a 90-61 home loss to league leader North Carolina A&T on Monday. The setback followed the team's 81-62 home triumph over Norfolk State Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs only league win this season.

Senior Marie Reid leads SC State is scoring with 15.7 points per game and is also second in rebounds with 6.0 each outing.  She is followed in the scoring column by junior Sophilia Hipps, who is averaging 14.3 points to go along with 4.1 boards per game.

The Lady Wildcats (7-10, 1-6 MEAC) are led by Demetria Frank with a 14.5 scoring average and a 6.6 rebounding mark. Sarah Bolden is the top rebounder with 9.7 each outing and trails only Frank in scoring with a 10.9 average.

Following Saturday's competition at Daytona Beach, SC State will remain in Florida where it will meet Florida A&M Monday at Tallahassee, FL. Tipoff is 5:30 for the women's game, with the men to follow at 7:30.

WSSB will also carry those contests.
