Orangeburg, SC—The Clemson Invitational proved to be an outstanding meet for the Bulldog men's and women's track teams. At the meet, held this past weekend, January 9-10, 2009, eight additional SC State track athletes qualified for the 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track Championships. On the men side Marcus Stephens, Kenneth Rackins, Levar Knight, Donta Young, Jahwaun Blair and Mark Elmore have all met the qualifying standards.
Stephens (6-2, 170, Fr., Macon, GA/Southwest Macon HS) had the best showing of the weekend as he jumped a NCAA provisional distance of 15.42 meters in the triple jump which was good enough for a second place finish. Rackins (6-10, 200, Sr., Swainsboro, GA/Swainsboro HS) qualified in the 400 with a first place time of 49.74. This is his second qualifying event as he has already qualified in the 200 meters. Rounding out the qualifiers on the men's side are Knight and Elmore in the long jump, Young in the 60 meter hurdles and Blair in the shot put.

On the women's side, Tempest Vance and Jasmine Smith won their respective event enroute to qualifying for the upcoming championships. Vance (5-4, R-Jr., Anderson, SC/Westside HS) ran a time of 57.33 in the 400 meters while Smith (5-10, Jr., Due West, SC/Dixie HS) jumped a distance of 12.07 meters (39-07 ¼) in the triple jump. This is Vance's third qualifying event of the year. She has previously qualified in the 200 meters and the 4x400 relay team.
Overall, the Bulldogs track teams has nine individual men and five individual women who have qualified for the championships. The women's 4x400 relay team also qualified.
