SC State’s Erickson and Thomas Earn Top Weekly Honors

NORFOLK, Va., – South Carolina State redshirt sophomore linebacker Joe Thomas was selected as Defense Player of the Week, while teammate senior kicker Blake Erickson earned Co-Special Teams Player of the Week honors, respectively the conference announced Monday.
 
Thomas (LB, 6-0, 230, So., Blackville, SC) recorded a career-high 14 tackles, one for a loss, as he guided the Bulldog's defense to a 23-13 non-conference victory over Georgia State. Thomas also recorded an interception in the victory to setup the team's first score.
 
Erickson (PK/P, 5-10, 165, Sr., Cantonment, Fla.) posted a perfect performance, connecting on 2-of-2 PATs and 3-of-3 field goal attempts with kicks of 41, 34, and 32 yards out in the Bulldogs' victory over non-conference opponent Georgia State. Erickson, who recorded 11 of the team's 23 points, helped the Bulldogs' end a 0-9 non-conference skid.
 
Also, earning honors were Al-Terek McBurse of Florida A&M was selected as the Offensive Player of the Week, Seth Higgins of Morgan State was selected as the Rookie of the Week while Steve Robinson of Florida A&M was named Offensive Lineman of the Week. Sharing Co-Special Teams Player of the Week honors with Erickson was Ryan Estep of Norfolk State and Sven Hurd of Bethune-Cookman.
 
Other Top Bulldog Performers:
 
Richard Cue (SC State) completed 16-of-30 passes for 213 yards and rushed 12 times for 45 yards with two TDs in the Bulldogs' win over Georgia State.
 
Samuel Hammond (SC State) recorded six pancake blocks and graded out at 91 percent of his assignments as he anchored the Bulldog's offensive line that assisted with 368 yards of total offense.
 
Steven Murphy (SC State) returned an interception 35 yards in the Bulldogs' 23-13 win over non-conference foe Georgia State.
