ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State will close out its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular season competition Monday when Florida A&M pays a visit to S-H-M Memorial Center for a league doubleheader, beginning with the women's game at 5:30 p.m. The men's contest will follow at approximately 7:30.
During a special ceremony between games, the SC State men's and women's tennis teams will be presented their 2009 MEAC Championship rings.
Against the Rattlers, the SC State men will be going for a sweep of the series this season. In an earlier meeting Feb. 1 at Tallahassee, the Bulldogs won 77-62 before a national ESPNU television audience.
Coach Tim Carter's team is 15-12 overall and 9-6 in the MEAC after Saturday's 58-46 home win over Bethune-Cookman. The Bulldogs are in third place in the league standings. The Rattlers were also victorious Saturday with a 75-61 triumph at Winston-Salem State, however, they enter Monday's contest at 8-20 overall and just 4-10 and in 10th place in the MEAC.
In the women's contest, SC State will be trying to win three consecutive contests for the first time since the 2007-08 campaign. Coach Doug Robertson's team edged Bethune-Cookman 71-67 in overtime Saturday for its second straight win, a victory that lifted the Lady Bulldogs to 10-17 and 5-10 in the MEAC. Robertson's team, eighth in the MEAC standings, will be trying to avenge a 68-53 setback to FAMU Feb. 1 at Tallahassee.
The visiting Lady Rattlers are 16-10 and 7-7 in the MEAC, good enough for sixth place in the league standings. FAMU is coming off a 66-52 win at Winston-Salem State on Saturday.
Following Monday's competition, SC State will close out its regular season Thursday against Winston-Salem State in a non-conference encounter. Both teams and the cheerleading squad will honor their seniors with a special “Senior Night” salute between games on Thursday.
