Academic Enhancement Offices
The program is located in Nix and Rowe Hall
Academic Enrichment Hours
During enrichment hours, all student-athletes can benefit from a quiet study atmosphere, tutorial assistance, and the use of computer labs. Daytime hours are always available. Each student-athlete will work with an Academic Enhancement Coordinator under the approval of the Head Coach to determine the number of academic enrichment hours required per week and schedule them accordingly. First year student-athletes and those student-athletes below a 2.5 GPA will be asked to do at least 8 hours per week of enrichment hours through a combination of objective based study hall, tutoring and meeting with their academic enhancement coordinator.
Academic Enrichment Hours
Sunday 3 pm – 7pm
Monday 12 pm - 9pm
Tuesday 12 pm - 9pm
Wednesday 12pm - 9pm
Thursday 12 pm - 9pm
Hours listed are for the Fall and Spring semesters. They are subject to change based on space availability. Summer hours will be determined based on student-athletes needs.
New Student Orientation
The New Student-Athlete Orientation is held three times per year: Prior to the start of summer session II, fall, and spring semesters. Orientation is an opportunity for incoming SC State freshmen student-athletes to be introduced to each other and learn about all of the student-athlete support services available. They often have the chance to meet members of the current faculty and upperclassmen student-athletes, and participate in leadership activities.
University Orientation
In order to ensure a smooth academic transition, the SC State offers University Orientation for all new students. New students to the university are required to take these activities starting with the Summer Orientation and then week long activities that begin a week before classes start. These programs are run by the Student Success and Retention Office and all students must be registered in order to be advised to receive courses for the start of the academic year.
Registration
Student-athletes register along with individuals in their academic class. Advisors are responsible for the registration of their student-athletes. Each student-athlete must adhere to the NCAA rules associated with course registration. Course registration is done online through Bulldog Connection using the student’s 9000 number and their PIN.
Fees & Validation
Once a student has registered for classes, fees will need to be applied to hold their schedule. Student’s fees must be applied each semester and validate that they will attend school the subsequent term. Fee payment is the responsibility of each student; but if they are not paid, their schedules will be dropped which could result in NCAA violations associated with practice rules. The steps needed to apply student’s fees and validate their schedule can be found on Bulldog connection.
Grade Monitoring
Grades for all student-athletes will be monitored by their advisor and the department. Grade information will be gathered through Banner, Blackboard, and progress reports sent out from the department. In addition to these readily available sources, advisors will periodically contact professors directly regarding a student’s progress. Student-athletes are responsible for their grades and should know at all times where they stand in a course.
Contact with Coaching Staff
All advisors will have contact with coaches regarding the academic endeavors of their student-athletes. It is up to the discretion of the coach and the advisor to how often they meet, but bi-weekly reports are due to coaches concerning student’s grades and class standing. These reports should also be forwarded to the Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Support Services.
NCAA Eligibility and Monitoring
Initial eligibility is monitored by compliance and continuing eligibility is monitored by the academic enhancement coordinators. All information regarding initial eligibility can be gathered through the Compliance office or Banner. It is the responsibility of the academic enhancement coordinators to monitor the eligibility of their student-athlete once they are enrolled. Eligibility is certified through the registrar’s office. Each college has a certification official that must sign off on all hours taken by a student to see if they are degree applicable, but the registrar is the final certifier of all students. To maintain continuing eligibility, all academic enhancement coordinators should utilize an eligibility sheets for each of their students.
Travel Letters
A travel letter is to be given to each traveling student-athlete during their season of competition. The letter acts as a schedule of missed classes due to competition. Attached is an example of a travel letter used by the department. All travel letters should be printed on athletics letterhead and signed to ensure authenticity.
Attendance Policy
University Policy
Students are obligated to complete all assigned work promptly, to attend class regularly, and to participate in whatever class discussion may occur. Absence from more than 10 percent of the scheduled class sessions, whether excused or unexcused, is excessive and the instructor may choose to exact a grade penalty for such absences. The instructor's attendance policy should be ascertained by the student at the beginning of the semester. It is of particular importance that a student who anticipates absences in excess of 10 percent of the scheduled class sessions receive prior approval from the instructor before the last day to change schedule as published in the academic and refund calendars on the registrar's Web site. It must be emphasized that the "10 percent rule" stated above applies to both excused and unexcused absences. Faculty members should notify classes specifically of the attendance policy which they intend to follow in each class.
Athletic Policy
It is the expectation of the SC State Athletics Department that student-athletes (including extended aid and medically exempted student-athletes) attend classes, arrive at class on time, complete all assignments in a timely manner, and demonstrate behavior in the classroom conducive to learning and appropriate for an academic environment. Student-athletes are expected to attend every class and laboratory session for all courses in which they are enrolled, unless such absence is otherwise excused in advance. Student-athletes are responsible for obtaining professor class attendance policies at the beginning of the semester, informing their professors of scheduled class absences due to competition and making arrangements to complete all missed academic work. Further, student-athletes must attend all required Athletics Department-scheduled tutor sessions, study hall sessions and academic meetings.
Although the expectation is for all student-athletes to attend class, class checking is focused on student-athletes that are in the Individual Success Program (ISP) [i.e., student-athletes with less than a 2.2 cum GPA and all first semester enrollees]. Student-athletes with a 2.5 cum GPA or less will also be monitored. Those student-athletes who fail to attend class or other required academic sessions or meetings scheduled by the Athletics Department are subject to the sanctions set forth in this Class Attendance Policy, including being withheld from practice and/or competition. This policy also includes student-athletes that are in the extended aid program or that are medically exempted and receiving athletics aid.
