Sixth-ranked Vols Defeat Bulldogs in NCAA Men’s Tennis Tournament

KNOXVILLE, TN– The South Carolina State Bulldogs men's tennis team ended its season in a 4-0 defeat to the sixth-ranked Tennessee Volunteers in first-round action Friday afternoon at Barksdale Stadium.
        “Our guys fought really hard and had a chance down the stretch before Peteris ankle started giving him problems,” said SC State head coach Hardeep Judge.  “Give the Vols credit they are a tough team and will go a long way in the tournament.
         The Vols (24-8) won the doubles point and then won four of six first sets against the Bulldogs (17-4), the champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champions.
          It's a really good start," Tennessee head coach Sam Winterbotham said. "It's hard to sit for two and a half, three weeks and then get out there and play again. They did great. I'm really impressed with them."
          After taking the double point with relative ease, Tennessee jumped out to one-set leads at Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5 singles and never looked back.
         In singles action senior Tomas Bizon loss 6-0, 6-4  to Mikelis Libietis at the No.1 spot; Anton Protsenko fell behind to drop a 1-6, 5-4 defeat; junior Artemiy Nikitin was up 6-4, 6-0 at the No.3 spot before the Bulldogs suffered tough losses at No. 4  and No. 5 spot.
         South Carolina State closed out the season with a 16-5 overall, 3-1 MEAC record.
        The Volunteers host No. 23 Clemson in second-round action Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. The Tigers outlasted No. 42 Boise State 4-3 Friday in the opening match of the Knoxville Regional.
