SC State Women's Draw No.2 UNC; Men Take On Tennessee

The defending women's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Champion South Carolina State University will travel to neighboring state North Carolina to take on the Lady Tar heels of UNC-Chapel Hill in the first round of the NCAA Tennis Championship Friday May 10, the NCAA Committee announced on Tuesday afternoon from Indianapolis.
         The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill women's tennis team was chosen as one of 16 hosts of their respective NCAA First and Second Round Championship matches, with the running from May 10 to 11 at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
       The nine-time defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Champion (MEAC) South  Carolina State (17-4) will face the second-ranked Lady Tar Heels (25-3) who received the No.2 seed in the 64-team draw, Friday May 10 in the First Round contest beginning at 1 p.m.
           It will be the third-ever meeting between the UNC Lady Tar Heels and South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs, which met in the first round of the 2004 and 2008 NCCA Tournament, with UNC taking a 4-0 victory in Chapel Hill in each of them.
          South Carolina State women's team is making its ninth-straight appearance of the NCAA Championships, while the UNC women's team is making its 11th appearance in the last 12 seasons. The No. 2 seed is the highest in program history, matching the 2010 squad that advanced the national semifinals.
       This season marks the 15th consecutive appearance in the national tournament and 10th in a row under head coach Brian Kalb's tenure. The Tar Heels have an all-time NCAA record of 26-14 and have advanced beyond the regional round on eight occasions, including last year's run to the round of 16.
         Meanwhile on the men's side, MEAC Champion South Carolina State will meet sixth-ranked Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tennis Championships on Friday May 10.
        This will be the first meeting between the two teams ever in school history.
        The Bulldogs (16-4) winners of the last nine-of-ten Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference titles will take on the Tennessee Volunteers (22-7)  who received the fourth seed overall from the region in the NCAA draw. South Carolina State will play Friday at 2 p.m. at the Barksdale Stadium, in Knoxville TN, in the opening round of with the winner advancing to the second round.
