ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State hit the field Friday for the first of 29 preseason football practices as the Bulldogs prepare for the 2012 campaign. Approximately 90 players participated in the one hour, forty-five minute workout conducted under the lights.
Bulldog head coach Buddy Pough, who is beginning his 11th season at the helm, said he, his staff and players were looking to have a great fall camp and that day one was a good start.
“It was just the first day, but we appear to be in decent shape,” Pough said. “Most of the guys moved around well and you could see the effects of our summer conditioning program.
“We don't know exactly what issues we will be facing because it's so early, but I'm excited. I have to temper my enthusiasm because it's going take a couple of days to see how our practices will wear on them (the players), but it was a good start.”
Pough said the SC State fall practices have been designed to take advantage of the good part of the day weather-wise. Most of the workouts will take place early in the morning or at night, according to the Bulldog mentor.
Pough added that there were few differences as the 2012 camp starts compared to his first 11 seasons. He did, however, point out the team's depth was better than in previous years.
“Our numbers are much better this year,” he said. “We have decent depth on the offensive line and our defensive front. We may have a little concern at a few positions but depth-wise, we are in better shape than most years.”
Pough said it was too early to tell much about his team, however, he said a few of the Bulldog newcomers appear ready to step in and help the squad.
SC State will conduct its “Press and Picture” day on Saturday (Aug. 4), beginning at 9 a.m. with the team picture at Willie Jeffries Field, Oliver C. Dawson Stadium. The Bulldogs will follow with their second practice in the evening, starting at 7 p.m.
