ORANGEBURG, SC – SC State continued spring football drills Saturday with its third session and the first in shoulder pads. The Bulldogs will work out in full pads for the first time Sunday, according to head coach Buddy Pough. Sunday's practice gets underway at 3:30 p.m.
During Saturday's practice, the Bulldogs emphasized team-style drills, along with some individual drills, according to Pough whose assessment at the end of the workout was mixed.
“It was our first day of team activity and I saw some good things and some bad things,” he said. “We are still installing but we got plenty to learn. It's just the third day but there are some guys we feel good about and others we have to coach them up a bit.
“It's a learning session, but one thing I'm still pleased about is the enthusiasm and work-ethic,” continued Pough. “What we need now is for the players to concentrate on assignments and play smarter and I'm confident that will come.”
Pough and his staff are evaluating three Bulldog quarterbacks – redshirt Junior Richard Cue, who started most of the 2011 campaign following an injury to redshirt senior Derrick Wiley, who is reportedly about 80 percent healed and seeing limited work, and Wiley's younger brother Tedarrius Wiley, a redshirt sophomore.
“Cue is pretty much the clear leader now,” noted Pough. “Thus, we are giving him more reps. But, Derrick has looked pretty solid despite not being at 100 percent. He is progressing well and coming along good. And, of course, Tedarrius is in the picture as well.”
Pough also expressed some excitement about the Bulldog defensive line, which has much more depth than the previous recent seasons.
