SC State Tennis Teams Open Spring Season With Victories

Bulldogs Falls To Stetson 4-2

JACKSONVILLE, FL—The South Carolina State men's and women's tennis teams opened the 2011 spring season with  victories over Jacksonville University Saturday at Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex.
        On the men's side, the Bulldogs (1-0) won in a 5-2 decision over the Dolphins (0-2). SC State got off to an early start with Kovalevych/Protsenko def. Fantova/Martinez 9-7, and Lee/Bizon def. Hansen n/Condez, 8-6 for the doubles point.
        In singles play at the No. 1 spot, senior Dmytro Kovalevych def.  Banos-Lopez (6-2, 6-2), No. 2 sophomore Anton Protsenko def. Fantova (6-2, 6-3), while at the No.3 junior Peter Vingradous def. Condez (3-6, 6-0, 6-3).
         Other single winners were sophomore Artemiy Nikitin defeating Hansen (6-4, 6-3) and Tomas Bizon winning 4-6, 6-4, and 7-6 over Martinez.
        The women dominated, winning 6-1 over the Lady Dolphins of Jacksonville University (1-2) on the day. Leading the way for the Lady Bulldogs (1-0) at the No.1 spot was senior Suhaila Jad def. Staudt (6-4, 6-2); at the No. 2 spot Maria Craciun def. Melibeu (6-3, 6-2) and the No. 3 Akilah James defeated Bartos 6-1 and 6-2.
         Other single winners were senior Sabrina Mendez defeating Goasal, 6-3, 6-1, and freshman Victoria Khateci, 6-1, 6-1 over Bezerra. The Lady Bulldogs also claimed the doubles point with James/Craciun (8-0), Jad/Mendez (8-2), and Barborikova/Bosneag (8-0) all posting victories.
         SC State men will return to action on Sunday when they remain in the sunshine state to take on Stetson University in a 1 p.m. showdown.

SC State Men's Tennis Team Falls To Stetson 4-2
 DELAND, FL —The South Carolina State men's tennis team dropped its first match of the season in a close 4-2 decision to Stetson Sunday.
The Bulldogs (1-1), playing their second match in two days, fell behind early losing the doubles point in the match.
In singles action, Artemiy Nikitin defeated Chester Espie 6-2, 6-2, while Young Kwan Lee won in three sets over Nathan Debut 3-6, 6-0, 7-5.
SC State will return to action on Feb.11, when the Bulldogs travel to Savannah, Ga to take on Savannah College Art & Design.
