Pair of Bulldog Tennis Players Earn Weekly MEAC Honor

NORFOLK, Va.,-- South Carolina State senior Dymtro Kovalevych was named Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, while freshman Katarina Barborikova earned the Women's Rookie of the Week honor the conference announced Friday.

Kovalevych (Sr., Ukraine) was 2-0 last week against Savannah Art & Design. He defeated SCAD's Dean Loock 6-1, 6-0 at the number one singles position. In doubles, Kovalevych teamed with Anton Protsenko at the number two spot to capture the point 8-2.

Barborikova (Fr., Bulgaria) won in singles action against Savannah Art and Design's Andrea Gonzalez (6-3, 6-1). In doubles play, Barborikova teamed with Laura Bosneag to earn the point for South Carolina State (8-6) and help the Lady Bulldogs to a 7-0 win.

Also honored, were Bethune-Cookman's Stacey Speller was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week.

Other Top SC State Performances:

Maria Craciun (SCSU) topped Maria Barrigan of Savannah Art and Design (6-3, 6-1) to help guide South Carolina State to a 7-0 win.
