ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State wrapped up its second week of preseason drills Saturday with its first scrimmage. During the approximately two-hour session, the Bulldog first-team offense worked against the second-team defense, while the second-team offense went against the first-team defense The session concluded with a lively series that pitted the first team offense against the first-team defense.
Bulldog head coach Buddy Pough said his team got in some good work during the scrimmage but noted SC State still has plenty of work ahead of it.
“It (the scrimmage) was pretty much like a first scrimmage,” Pough said. “There were a lot of inconsistencies and missed assignments, but we will be able to get a real picture of how we did after evaluating the film.
“But, I believe we got in some good work,” he continued. “We still have a good ways to go but we are making progress. The offense unit, of course, is still trying to learn some of the nuances of the offense we will be using against other teams.”
Derrick Wiley, who backed up the departed
Malcolm Long the last two years, and
Richard Cue received most of the work at quarterback during the scrimmage, however, Tedarrius Wiley also got a turn behind center.
Derrick Wiley, playing with the first-team offense, directed three scoring drives, Cue was at the throttles during two series that led to scores and Tedarrius Wiley was the signal caller for one.
“I think Derrick did some good things and a few bad things also,” said Pough. “All the quarterbacks had some strong points and were effective at times, however, there is plenty of room for improvement. We will take a look at the film.”
Pough expressed his pleasure at the progress some of the freshman players were making. He noted that running backs Julius Pendergrass of Chester and Jalen Simmons of Charlotte, defensive linemen Andrew Carter of Hamlet, NC and Alex Glover of Charlotte and offensive linemen
Devin Flowers of Charlotte and Avery Grant of Mullins were having good camps.
The Bulldogs will take Sunday off, then return to drills on Monday.
