PORT ST. LUCIE, FL – The South Carolina State women's golf team carded an 18-hole total of 318 Saturday -- the best round in the history of the program – during second-round action of the 24th PGA National Minority Golf Collegiate Championship, shaving 20 strokes off its opening round score.
The 318 by SC State eclipsed a round of 321 the team shot earlier at Savannah State. The Lady Bulldogs, however, remain in fourth place in the seven-team women's field at the PGA Golf Club. Saturday's score, coupled with a 338 on Friday, put Coach Sandy Burris' team at 656 for the 54-hole tournament, which concludes Sunday.
Burris expressed her delight with the team's showing Saturday, following a rough outing on Friday.
“We really had a tough round on Friday,” she said, “However, I was very pleased with how the team responded to the challenge on Saturday, setting a school record in the process. It's a real tribute to the girls that they bounced back from a poor first round with a 318 to better the previous low round of 321 and it comes on such a big stage – the PGA National Minority Championship.”
SC State junior Honesty Biggers, who had a 4-over 76 Saturday, has a two-day total of (82-76) 158 to lead her team. Freshman Cabriel is second at (79-82) 161, followed by Marina Terry, also a freshman, who carded a 79 Saturday -- 10 strokes better than her opening round of 89 -- at 168, followed by senior Geneva Mackey is one stroke back at (88-81) at 169. Also competing for the Lady Bulldogs is freshman Allison Brown who is at (100-99) 199.
Bethune-Cookman, which carded a 295 for a second straight day, is at 590 and continues to lead the women's competition. Texas Pan American is at (322-303) 625 and moves from third to second ahead of Hampton, which is at (320-308) 628.
Then comes SC State (338-318) at 656, followed by Alabama State (356-334) at 690, Lincoln (Mo.) at (366-339) 705 and Tennessee State (358-362) at 720.
Bethune-Cookman's Kim Wong continues to lead the women's individual competition with a 3-under par (70-71) 141.
