Port St. Lucie, FL – The South Carolina State women's golf team is in fourth place in the seven-team women's field after the opening round of the 24th PGA National Minority Collegiate Golf Championship at the PGA Golf Club.
The Lady Bulldogs carded an 18-hole team total of 338 for their fourth-place showing in the 54-hole event which continues Saturday and Sunday on the par 72, approximately 6,200-yard Ryder Course.
Six-time champion Bethune-Cookman, with three players among the top ten performers, leads the field with an 18-hole total of 295. Hampton was in second with a 320, followed by Texas Pan American, the defending champion, at 322.
Then come Coach Sandy Burris' Lady Bulldogs at 338, followed by Alabama State at 356, Tennessee State at 358 and Lincoln (Mo.) with a 366.
Leading the way for SC State is freshman Cabriel Duren of Oviedo, Fla. with a 7-over par 79. She is followed by junior Honesty Biggers of Orlando with a 10-over 82, Geneva Mackey of Tucson, AZ with an 88 and freshman Marina Terry with an 89. Also participating for the Lady Bulldogs is Allison Brown, who had a 100 on the difficult course.
Bethune-Cookman's Kim Wong is the individual leader with a 2-under 70. Following her are teammates Maria Urquiola at 1-over 73 and Emma Tayler with a 2-over 74. Also at 74 is Texas Pan American's Haley Hocott. SC State's Duren is tied for ninth with her round of 79.
