SC State's Flagler, Toombs Named To All-MEAC Basketball Team

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., – South Carolina State senior guard/forward Jason Flagler and freshman point guard Khalif Toombs was named to the All-MEAC team announced Thursday by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). All awards were voted on by the conference's head coaches and sports information directors around the league. 

 

The 2010 All-MEAC men's basketball regular season honors were announced  with Flagler being named All-MEAC First Team and Toombs named to the All-Rookie Team.

 

Jason Flagler, a 6-4 guard/forward from Woodbridge, VA ., is the leading scorer for the third place South Carolina State Bulldogs averaging 14.9 points and grabbing 5.3 rebounds per game. Flagler the teams captain  started in 26 of the 27 games played this season averaging over 33.8 minutes per contest.

 

Khalif Toombs, a 5-9 point guard, from Atlantic City, New Jersey., the floor general for Coach Tim Carter's Bulldogs,  is averaging 6.3 points per game and dishing out 98 assists, along with 23 steals on the year. He also, started 16 of the 28 games and is averaging 23.9 minutes on the season

 

 Also receiving honors were senior guard Reggie Holmes was named the 2010 MEAC Player of the Year.  Bear's head coach Todd Bozeman was named the MEAC Coach of the Year, for the third straight season.  DeWayne Jackson was named the 2010 MEAC Rookie of the Year, while sophomore forward Kevin Thompson garnered the Defensive Player of the Year honors. 

 

Joining Jason Flagler on the MEAC's First-Team is Michael Delaoch (Norfolk State), C.J. Reed (Bethune-Cookman), and Reggie Holmes and Kevin Thompson (Morgan State). Also along with Khalif Toombs on the MEAC's ALL-Rookie team were Dadrian Collins (Howard), Branden Doughty (Coppin State), DeWayne Jackson (Delaware State) and Mike Phillips (Howard).

 

The Morgan State Bears clinched their third straight regular season title with a 65-61 win over Maryland Eastern Shore (Feb. 20).  The Bears will enter tournament play as the No. 1 seed and will face the winner of the No. 8/No.9 matchup on Wednesday, March 10 beginning at 7 p.m. 

 

The Delaware State Hornets will battle Maryland Eastern Shore for the conference's sole runners-up position tonight.  A win over the Hawks would secure the Hornets as the 2010 runners-up while a loss would give DSU a share of the second place honor with the South Carolina State Bulldogs.  Regardless of the outcome, the Hornets will enter tournament play as the No. 2 seed and compete on Wednesday, March 10 against the winner of the No. 7/No.10 matchup immediately following the Bears' game. 

 

The 2010 regular season champion, regular-season runners-up, first-team members and top honorees including Player, Rookie, Defensive and Coach of the Year selections, will be recognized in pre-game presentations prior to their first games of the 2010 MEAC Basketball Tournament.  The tournament spans March 9-13 at the Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
