Lady Bulldogs Win Bowling Classic

SUMTER, SC—The South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs bowling team captured the first inaugural SC State Classic held 13-14 at Shaw Lanes, Shaw Air Force Base, and Sumter, SC.

 

SC State Lady Bulldogs played host to four other universities including, North Carolina Central, Bethune-Cookman, Norfolk State, and Winston Salem State University. 

 

The Lady Bulldogs won 10 of 11 matches over the four participating universities to take home the first place trophy during the tournament.

 

“We could not have achieved any victory without the solid play from everyone,” said SC State bowling coach Lorra Bailey.  “I'm very proud of my team and how hard they have worked all season.”

 

The first day of competition featured a five-person team play with freshman Mariah Hebbe's leading the way for South Carolina State. Hebbe's, six strikes in row, scored a game-high 209, and led SC State to victory over Bethune-Cookman College 815 to763.

 

In the second match NCCU handed the Lady Bulldogs their only loss by 37 pins. Former Crestwood High graduate senior Marisa Hicks finished with a score of 200, while NCCU was led by Toria Silver with a game-high 225.

 

South Carolina State finished strong in the first day of play by defeating, WSSU, Norfolk State, and avenging their only loss defeating NCCU 825 to 813. The top finishers were Darcie

Evans (SC State) 191 against Norfolk State. Marisa Hicks (183) and Stephanie Sinclair (181) teamed up for victory over NCCU.

 

In second day of competition using the Baker's System, the Lady Bulldogs won four out the the last schedule matches to advance to the finals.  Also advancing were NSU who finish second, BCU who finish third and NCCU who fell from first to fourth place.

 

In the final match SCSU rolled their highest score of the event as the team bowled eight strikes in the game, scoring 235 and defeating NSU in five games.

 

“I look forward to March and a chance at us competing for an MEAC title,” stated Bailey.

 

South Carolina State will return to action on March 19-21 when they travel to Greensboro, NC to compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Bowling Championships.
