SC State Takes On Bethune-Cookman In MEAC Doubleheader

Both Games Will be Aired On WSSB 90.3

DAYTONA BEACH, FL—The South Carolina men’s and women’s basketball team will travel to the sunshine state to take on Bethune-Cookman in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader, which gets underway at 2 p.m. at Moore Gymnasium. The men’s game will follow approximately at 4 p.m.

      The men’s team is coming off an impressive 97-82 over Norfolk State Monday, while the women’s captured its first league win over The Lady Spartans of Norfolk State 74-73.

        Senior All-MEAC guard/forward leads the men in scoring with 14.8 ppg, while JUCO transfer Darnell Porter is second with 13.9 points per contest. Senior reserve forward Arsenio Williams gives the Bulldogs that extra lift off the bench averaging 8.8 ppg and 4.9 rbg. Flagler also leads the team in rebounding with 6.3 boards.

             Coach Doug Robertson’s team is paced by senior guard Sophilia Hipps with 14.8 points per game and sophomore Whitney Wiley, who is contributing 13.3 points each outing. Sophomore Paris Alston is the top rebounder with 6.4 per game and is also averaging 8.7 points for SC State.

In Monday’s win, the Lady Bulldogs (6-12, 1-5) were led by senior Sophilia Hipps with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The SC State men (9-8, 3-3)  bounced back  after a tough loss 67-58 to North Carolina A&T on last week  to pick up their third league win of the season over Norfolk State 97-82 on Monday. It was freshman Khalif Toombs leading the way with 21 points, while junior Darnell Porter contributed 19 in the victory.

         The Bethune-Cookman men (12-8, 5-2) are coming off a 67-64 loss against Howard University. Coach Clifford Reed’s team which is led by – CJ Reed (16.8 ppg), and Alexander Starling (10.6 ppg, and 7.5 rbg).

         Both the games will be aired WSSB with the women's game in progress at 3 p.m. and carry the men's game in its entirety beginning at approx. 4.

ORANGEBURG, SC – Funeral services for former South Carolina State basketball standout Ernest “Sonny” Jackson will be held Friday (Mar. 26) at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Moriah Pentecostal Church, 7909 Stenton Ave., Philadelphia. Pa.  Jackson, a 1964 SC State alumnus, died Mar. 21 after an extended illness.
