Orangeburg, SC- After having a week off from competition, the South Carolina State men's and women's indoor track and field teams will head to Johnson City, TN this weekend to participate in the 32nd Annual Niswonger Invitational hosted by East Tennessee State University (ETSU). The two day meet will held Friday-Saturday, Jan. 22-23, 2010 at the David E. Walker Track inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center.
This year's meet will showcase some of the world's top collegiate, post collegiate, and professional athletes. Over 1,500 athletes from 75 teams will compete in the two-day event. In addition to SC State some notable universities making the trip to Johnson City include: Alabama (SEC), Appalachian State, Samford and Western Carolina from the SoCon, UAB from Conference USA, Gardner-Webb and Winthrop from the Big South and A-Sun competitors Kennesaw State, USC Upstate and Lipscomb. The meet will also feature fellow MEAC Foes, Bethune-Cookman University and North Carolina A&T State University.
Going into this meet, third-year head coach, Tyree E. Price is optimistic about his team chances. “We have as good of a chance as any team to do well in this meet,” says Price. “We have several athletes making strides thus far and this competition will afford us the opportunity to have several more.”
Expected to have a good showing in this weekend meet will be
Erica Peake,
Jasmine Smith and
Brittney Stewart on the women side and Chris Ward, Marcus Stephens and Levar Knight on the men's side. Each of these athletes had excellent showings in the teams first meet back from the holidays, (Jan. 8-9, 2010 at the Clemson Invitational).
The Bulldog Track & Field Teams will also look to add to its qualifying list for the upcoming Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships which will be held Thursday-Saturday, February 11-13, 2010 in Landover, MD. To date the teams has combined to qualify 16 athletes for the championships.
