WASHINGTON, DC – South Carolina State head football coach Buddy Pough and offensive lineman Johnny Culbreath are among the college football standouts scheduled to be
honored Friday (Jan. 15) at the Washington (DC) Pigskin Club’s 72nd Annual Awards Diner at the Capital Hilton Hotel, beginning at 7 p.m.
The event annually recognizes outstanding achievement in football on the interscholastic, collegiate and professional level, and also acknowledges the accomplishments of young people and community leaders who serve as role models, according to club president Lucille Hester.
Pough will receive the Talmadge L. Hill Award, given annually by the club to the outstanding coach in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, while Culbreath will be presented the Cato W. Adams Trophy, presented annual to the MEAC player designated as Player of the Year in the league by the Club.
Coaches and players from each of the four historical Black conferences and Washington’s “Unsung Heroes” will be among the award recipients.
Pough guided SC State to a 10-victory season for a second straight year. The Bulldogs finished 10-2 overall and were a perfect 8-0 in the MEAC for the second time in as many years and earned back-to-back appearances in the prestigious FCS playoffs. The SC State alum upped his record to 67-26 overall and 51-12 in the MEAC. He trails only legendary retired Bulldog head coach Willie Jeffries on the all-time victory list at SC State.
Culbreath, who anchored an offensive line that was the most dominant in the MEAC, helped SC State lead the league in several offensive categories. He was a first-team All-MEAC selection and the Offensive Line of the Year in the league.
The 6-6, 310 Monroe, Georgia native also earned AP FCS second-team All-America accolades, was a Box-to-row.com/BASN All-American and an All-State selection.
