CULLOWEE, NC – The South Carolina State women's golf team carded an 18-hole team total of 328 Saturday in opening round action of the 11th Annual Great Smokies Intercollegiate Golf Championship at the par 72, 5,922-yard Waynesville Inn Golf Resort to place 21st in the 24-team field. The final 18 holes will be played Sunday, beginning at 9:15 a.m.

The 328 team total is the best round ever for the SC State women, who were led by freshman Cabriel Duren with a 5-over par 77. It was the college debut for Duren, whose round included 10 pars and an eagle.

Following her for Coach Sandy Burris' team were senior Addi McLaren, who carded a 7-over par 80, junior Honesty Biggers, with an 83 and freshman Marina Terry with an 88.

Burris, who made her coaching debut at the helm of the SC State women's golf program at the event, noted that despite her team's place in a very strong field, she was proud of her players' effort.

“The girls worked very hard amid some tough conditions,” she said. “As a team, they made a good solid effort and are pushing each other to reach the goal (to get better each outing) they have set for the season.”
