ORANGEBURG, SCSouth Carolina State president, Dr. George E. Cooper, will address the AMI (Associated Marine Institutes) kids group during its opening ceremony and pep rally Monday at approximately 7:30 p.m. at the Felton Laboratory School on the campus.

AMIkids is holding its four-day (Jun. 1-4) Sports Challenge Summer Games at SC State after three years at Benedict in Columbia.

The event affords youths from across the Palmetto State the opportunity to participate in challenging motivational activities that include sports and various academic contests, according to Heyward Golden, vice president of operations for the group and a former Bulldog standout defensive back.

Thirty teams of 10-12 kids from across South Carolina, who will begin arriving on the SC State Monday afternoon, will be housed on the campus. The opening ceremony and pep rally, where Dr. Cooper will speak, kick off the games and academic competition.

Tuesday’s schedule will feature track competition, followed by swimming and volleyball events Wednesday, and volleyball and a closing ceremony Thursday. Academic competition will take place daily, and each night the group will gather for general assembly and awards.

AMIkids, headquartered in Tampa, Fla., has been serving inner city youths and their families since 1969.

Several of the counselors and volunteers assisting AMIkids this week are former SC State athletes and coaches.
