Smith Captures Triple Jump

GREENSBORO, NC – The South Carolina State women amassed 57 points to finish seventh, while the men scored 34 points for a tenth-place showing the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships at the Irwin Belk Track on the North Carolina A&T campus.

            The Norfolk State men tallied 133.50 points to win their fourth straight MEAC outdoor title, while the Hampton women had 119 points to take their fourth straight championship.

The SC State women Saturday picked up a first place in the triple jump as Jasmine Smith took top honors with a leap of 12.77m (41-10.75 ft.); a third by Rene McWilliams in the 100 meters in a regional qualifying time of 11.71; a fifth in the 4x100 meter relay (Shari Sampson, Nicole Mobley, Rene McWilliams and Monique Gracia) in a clocking of 46.14, and also scored in the 3000-meter steeplechase with Brittney Stewart taking third (11:44.20) and Patrecia Daniley finishing sixth (12:37.79), and a seventh in the 4x400 meter relay (Natalee Allen, Andranette Moss, Sampson and Elizabeth Govrik) in a clocking of 3:47.54.

            Scoring for the Bulldogs Saturday were Leighton Brown, third in the javelin with a toss of 51.45m (169-01); Donta Young in the 110-meter hurdles, fifth in a time of 14.22; Young, also fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 53.04; and Marvin Williams, seventh in the 400 meter hurdles at 54.23.

            On Friday, SC State got a record-setting performance from Shamire Rothmiller in the women’s shot put with a toss of 14.97m (49-01.50 ft.), a second from Rothmiller in the javelin with a throw of 41.56m (136-04 ft.), and a first from Noel Facey in the men’s discus with a throw of 45.93m (150-08 ft.).

            SC State performers earning spots in the East Regional at Greensboro May 29-30 include Rothmiller in the shot, McWilliams in the 100 meters and Smith in the triple jump for women; and Facey in the discus and Young in the 110-meter hurdles for men. Earlier Tempest Vance, who was injured during the women’s Heptathlon on Thursday and unable to compete the rest of the way, earlier qualified for the regional in the 400-meter hurdles.

Orangeburg, SC—Jebreh Harris has been named assistant cross-country/track and field coach at South Carolina State. Harris began his duties on February 1.
            Harris joins the SC State staff after serving the past season five seasons (2004-2009) as a volunteer-assistant coach at his alma mater University of Tennessee-Knoxville (UT). While at UT, Harris also served several years as a track coach with the Knoxville Track Club working with the youth program. He also has spent time as a sports specific/personal trainer (Performance Training Inc.) Where he has trained several world class athletes and designed workout for clients with particular needs.
