GREENSBORO, NC – South Carolina State's Leighton Brown is sixth at the halfway point of the Decathlon at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Track and Field Championship being conducted at the Irwin Belk Track Complex. The competition wraps up Saturday.
Brown, a freshman javelin thrower of Bluffton, finished third in the shot, fourth in both the 100 meters and 400 meters and tied for eighth in both the long jump and high jump in amassing 3148 points. Norfolk State's Darris Shelton leads the competition with 3609 after five events.
SC State's Tempest Vance, one of the favorites in the Heptathlon, was in third place with 2129 points after three events before suffering an ankle injury in the high jump and pulling up at the start of the 200 meters.
The Anderson junior, whose best event is the 400 meter hurdles, was third in both the 100 meter hurdles and shot, and fifth in the high jump before the injury. She had earlier set an MEAC indoor record in the Pentathlon with 3670 points. Her status for the remaining four events is doubtful.
Coppin State's Natoya Baird leads the Heptathlon with 3123 points after four events.
Most field events and the majority of the running events get underway on Friday.
