Four SC State Players Earn MEAC Postseason Honors

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Four South Carolina State basketball players – three on the men’s team and one from the women’s squad -- have earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference postseason honors, the league announced Monday.

Senior center Jason Johnson was named to the All-MEAC first team and also garnered Defensive Player of the Year honors post season. Junior guard/forward Jason Flagler was named to the All-MEAC second team, while freshman guard Jimmy Williams earned a spot on the All-MEAC Rookie Team. And, senior Marie of the Lady Bulldog team, was named to the All-MEAC second team

Johnson, a 6-7 Bronx, NY native, was joined on the first team by Player of the Year Tywain McKee of Coppin State, Reggie Holmes of Morgan State, Michael Deloach of Norfolk State, and Eugene Myatt of Howard.

Johnson was the Bulldogs’ top scorer with a 14.4 average. He led the league in rebounds with 8.5 per game and in field goal percentage at .617, third-best in the nation, and also had 41 blocks and 27 steals. The SC State standout earned MEAC weekly honors three times during the season – twice as Defensive Player of the Week and once as Player of the Week. He recorded 10 double-doubles for the Bulldogs.

Flagler was second to Johnson in both scoring and rebounding for SC State with 13.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, respectively. As a freshman, the Woodbridge, Va. native was named to the MEAC All-Rookie Team 13.1 and 6.3.

Williams, a 6-4 Dublin, Ga. native, was third on the team in scoring with an 8.3 mark, to go along with a 4.4 rebounding mark. He topped the team in field goal percentage from behind the three-point line with a .366 showing.

Reid led the SC State women in scoring with a 16.4 mark and added 5.6 rebounds each outing.

North Carolina A&T’s Brittanie Taylor-James was named women’s Player of the Year; Coach of the Year honors went to Lady Aggie head coach Patricia Bibbs and Todd Bozeman, both of who guide their teams to regular-season titles.

ORANGEBURG, SC – Funeral services for former South Carolina State basketball standout Ernest “Sonny” Jackson will be held Friday (Mar. 26) at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Moriah Pentecostal Church, 7909 Stenton Ave., Philadelphia. Pa.  Jackson, a 1964 SC State alumnus, died Mar. 21 after an extended illness.
