ORANGE BURG, SC – The South Carolina State men will try to continue their hot streak Saturday, while the Lady Bulldogs will try to snap a five-game slide when they travel to Norfolk, Va. to take on Norfolk State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader that gets underway at 4 p.m. with the women’s contest.

Both contests can be heard over SC State campus station, WSSB (90.3 FM), courtesy of the Spartan Basketball Network.

Coach Tim Carter’s Bulldogs (12-12, 7-5 MEAC) have won two in a row and six of seven to up its record to the .500 mark overall and 7-5 in the league, which puts the Bulldogs in a three-way tie with North Carolina A&T and Coppin State for second place in the MEAC standings behind Morgan State.

Norfolk State (8-15, 6-6 MEAC), just one game behind the second-place log jam, has lost two in a row and four of its last five contests. One of the Spartans’ MEAC victories, however, was a 68-62 triumph over SC State at Orangeburg Jan. 24.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs will be senior Jason Johnson, who has been slowed recently by a bout with the flu and a knee injury. The Bronx, NY senior is averaging 14.2 points and 8.3 rebounds, the latter tops in the MEAC.

Also in double figures for SC State is junior Jason Flagler, who is contributing 12.8 points and 6.0 rebounds.

The Spartans will be led by MEAC scoring leader Michael DeLoach, who is tossing in 20.9 points per game.

The SC State women (5-18, 2-10 MEAC), who have lost five straight, will face a Lady Spartan team (0-22, 0-12 MEAC) that has yet to win a game this season. One of their 22 losses came at the hands of SC State – which has won just two MEAC games – Jan. 24 by a score of 81-62.

Following Saturday’s action, SC State will travel to Greensboro, NC Monday to take on North Carolina A&T in another league doubleheader, beginning at 6 p.m.
