SAVANNAH, GA – The South Carolina State women's golf team shot a school-record 18-hole total of 322 Monday and is just eight shots off the lead after the first round of the 36-hole Savannah State Tiger Fall Invitational at the par-71 Henderson Golf Course.
The round of 322 was six strokes better than the 328 Coach Sandy Burris' team carded earlier in the season at Western Carolina to set a then-school record. The Lady Bulldogs trail only leader Hampton, which had an 18-hole total of 314 in the six-team field.
Freshman Cabriel Duren had a 7-over par 78 to lead SC State. She was followed by senior Addi McLaren, who was one stroke back with a 79. Junior Honesty Biggers carded an 82 and senior Geneva Mackey an 83. Also participating for Burris' team was freshman Allison Brown, who was filling in for an injured Marina Terry, and carded a 108.
Burris praised the effort of her team, which wraps up a challenging 5-match fall schedule with the event.
“We played a hard fall schedule with the intentions of improving and lowering our scores,” she said. “We are finally beginning to see some results and I'm proud of our young women.”
The final 18 holes will get underway Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
