SC State Indoor Track Make Strides With Each Meet

Orangeburg, SCThe SC State men’s and women’s track programs continues to make strides with each meet. Both teams had several high finishes and set personal best at last weekend’s Hampton University Invitational held at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton, VA.

the triple jump. Stephens jumped 14.85 meters (48-8 ¾). Junior Levar Knight jumped a person best in the long jump with a mark of 7.23 meters (23-8 ¾) and freshman Darin Washington placed fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 22.57. Noel Facey and Jahwuan Blair finished third and fourth in the shot put with throws of 15.29 meters (50-2) and 14.85 meters (48-8 ¾) respectively.
 

Jr., Jasmine Smith

On the women side senior Jasmine Smith and freshman Shamire Rothmiller both finished first in their respective events. Smith placed first in the triple jump with an indoor personal best of 12.03 meters (40-1 ½). Rothmiller won the shot put with a personal best throw of 14.50 meters (47-7). Freshman Brittney Stewart and sophomore Brandi Jefferson also had good showings for the Lady Bulldogs. Stewart finished fourth in both the 3000 meters and 5000 meters. She recorded times of 11:04.68 and 18:53.91 respectively. Jefferson finished third in the pentathlon with a total of 2,754 points.
 
Overall, second year head coach Tyree. E. Price was impressed with the showing that his teams displayed. “I am very pleased with all of our athletes, and our field event athletes are doing extremely well,” said Price. “We have constantly expressed the importance of strength in the program, and the strength training and the athlete’s mental focus are direct contributors to their success.” 
 
With just a couple of weeks remaining before the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championships, Coach Price is looking for more good things from his athletes. “We are looking for improvements every meet and more personal records from all of our athletes,” said Price.
 
Both teams will be in action this weekend, Friday-Saturday, Jan. 30-31, at the Niswonger Invitational hosted by East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN.

Landover, MD—The SC State women’s track and field team finished fourth at the 2010 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships. The championships were contested at the Prince Georges County Sports and Learning Center in Landover, MD.
 
This is the second straight season that the Lady Bulldogs have made a three place jump in the standings. In 2009, the Lady Bulldogs finished seventh which was a three place improvement from 2008 when they finished 10th.

Orangeburg, SC- The South Carolina State Men’s and Women’s Track Teams will travel to Landover, MD to participate in the 2010 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championships. The two-day meet, which will be held at the Prince George County Sports and Learning Complex, will take place Friday-Saturday, Feb. 12-13. The championships will feature all 11 institutions from the MEAC Conference.

Orangeburg, SC—Jebreh Harris has been named assistant cross-country/track and field coach at South Carolina State. Harris began his duties on February 1.
            Harris joins the SC State staff after serving the past season five seasons (2004-2009) as a volunteer-assistant coach at his alma mater University of Tennessee-Knoxville (UT). While at UT, Harris also served several years as a track coach with the Knoxville Track Club working with the youth program. He also has spent time as a sports specific/personal trainer (Performance Training Inc.) Where he has trained several world class athletes and designed workout for clients with particular needs.

Chapel Hill, NC—The second day of the Dick Taylor Carolina Track & Field Classic was cancelled due to inclement weather. The meet, which was scheduled for Friday-Saturday, Jan. 29-30, was hosted by the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill at the Dick Taylor Track -Eddie Smith Field House on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill.
 
Both Bulldog track and field teams fared well in the shortened meet which was contested on Friday, Jan. 29.

Orangeburg, SC- After an excellent showing in its third meet of the 2009-10 indoor season, the SC State men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams will head to Chapel Hill, NC to participate in the Dick Taylor Carolina Classic. The meet, which is scheduled for Friday-Saturday, Jan. 29-30, will be hosted by the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill at the Dick Taylor Track -Eddie Smith Field House on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill.
            The meet gets underway on Friday morning at 11 a.m. with women’s pentathlon and will feature teams from several NCAA Division I conferences as well as a couple of Division I independents.

Orangeburg, SC- After having a week off from competition, the South Carolina State men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams will head to Johnson City, TN this weekend to participate in the 32nd Annual Niswonger Invitational hosted by East Tennessee State University (ETSU). The two day meet will held Friday-Saturday, Jan. 22-23, 2010 at the David E. Walker Track inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center.
