Princess Anne, MD (Jan. 12, 2009)—Sophilia Hipps scored a game-high 21 points and pulled in seven rebounds as SC State fell to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), 73-61, in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match-up at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center in Princess Anne, MD.
For the second straight game SC State (3-10, 0-2 MEAC) was plagued by turnovers as they committed 15 in the first half and 23 in the game. UMES (4-8, 1-1 MEAC) was able to capitalize on the Lady Bulldogs mistakes scoring 21 points of the turnovers.
UMES, who controlled the game from start to finish, went up by as many as 18 on the SC State in the first half and enjoyed a 13 point lead at intermission. The Lady Bulldogs managed to put together a mini run early in the second half to pull within seven but could not get any closer, eventually falling by 12, 73-61.
Despite the loss, SC State had three players to score in double-figures as Kristin Johnson scored 12; Marie Reid scored 10 and Hipps. Johnson recorded her first double-double of the season as she pulled in a game-high 10 rebounds.
April McBride scored 21 points and Casey Morton scored 17 points with seven rebounds to lead the Lady Hawks in the victory.
SC State will close out its four-game road swing next Saturday and Monday when they travel to Hampton, VA and Washington, DC to take on Hampton University and Howard University respectively.
